Help:How to enter translations

• English is currently the privileged language in the ISFDB in that foreign language translations of English language books do not get their own title records; they are entered as Publications under the English language title instead.
• For works that were originally written in a foreign language, the canonical title is the title of the work as it appeared in that language. If one or more English language translations of the title have been published, then they should be entered as Variant Titles. If not English translations exist at this time, do not create a Variant Title in English. If the literal translation of the title is known, document it in the Notes field.
• Translations of foreign language titles to other ("third party") languages do not get their own title records and are entered as Publications under the main title record instead.
• If a book was written in English, but a foreign language translation was published first, then the English language title is entered as the canonical title.
• When entering the name of an Author or a title that uses non-Latin characters, use the English (i.e. transliterated) form of the name/title when known.
• If you don't know the language involved, you may have a hard time distinguishing title from subtitle or telling exactly what the publisher name is. For example, publisher attributions often include the city name, but you may not be able to tell where the publisher's name ends and the city name begins. In these cases, make Notes in the publication notes field to explain what you have entered.
• There is currently no support for a "translated by" field in the database. Translators should be recorded in the Notes field.
