Images

Accepted your edit adding an image and artist credit to [this] publication. However, even though you uploaded the image correctly, it did not display in the record. The URL that needs to be pasted into the record field is not the one that appears on the Upload page. Counterintuitive, I know! Once you have that page showing you can get the correct URL a couple of ways: right-click the image and choose "Copy Image Address", then paste; click on the image and then it will display on a page by itself [no Wiki data showing] then copy the URL from the bar and paste it into the field of the record. Nearly every new editor makes the same mistake. I found the image in the upload log and copied it into the record for you. One question: does the artist's name only have one 'f'? Changing verified pubs

It is ISFDB Policy that an editor notify anyone who has done a primary verification of a publication record. You've made two submissions changing the cover artist from "Hofmann" to "William Hofmann" in two such records. Just click on the name of the editor who verified the pubs (Logan's Run and The Joy Makers), which leads to their user page. Clicking on "Discuss This Page" leads to their user talk page. Just leave a message about the changes you're making in the record. Some editors have specific directions about how changes to their verified pubs should be handled. I saw the note on my talk page. Always good to have another mystery solved. I uploaded Hofmann's signature to the Signature page so the artist can be identified for other pubs. Also changed the credit for my copy of The Unicorn Girl. Thanks, --Willem H. 22:19, 29 December 2010 (UTC)

Comments/questions about La Tierra Permanece

Hi. I accepted your submissions of 1962 and 1967 editions of La Tierra Permanece. I had to remove the link you provided to the cover -- we do not have permission to link to images on the blogspot.com site (this kind of linking uses their server bandwidth, so we need to have permission). See Help:Screen:EditPub#ImageURL for a list of sites from which we do have permission, as well as details about how to ask for permission and how to upload files. Assuming that's your blog, you'd probably be best off uploading that scan to the ISFDB server and linking the publications to that. See Help:How_to_upload_images_to_the_ISFDB_wiki for an explanation of how to do that.

My question is about the publisher. "Ediciones Minotauros" makes me think that's actually a series and the publisher's name is "Minotauro". Would you check how the books present the name?

Question--the only file I uploaded before (the 1969 Earth Abides cover) was my own scan. The scans on my blog have been harvested from the net. Can I upload these under fair use? Dealing with translated titles

Hi again. I see now what you did with the above translations of Earth Abides. I did fix up the titles, but here's an explanation of how these are handled, should you ever have the chance to enter some other translated publications. It's a complicated explanation (don't let that daunt you), but it can save you some work.

Each book actually has two components: a "Title" (representing the work, as a unique conceptual entity) and a "Publication" (representing the appearance of the work in book form). To make matters more confusing, the "Publication"'s name is referred to in the editing screens as the "publication title", but this is separate from the "Title" -- the Publication's name (a.k.a. "title") and the work's Title can be two completely different things. In the case of a non-English translation of an original English work, we want to end up with a Publication whose name ("title") is the translation, but whose Title is the original English one, shared with all of the other publications of that work.

When you "Add New Pub", the system simultaneously creates both a Title and a Publication. "Clone This Pub", on the other hand, creates another Publication (populated from the information of the publication you are cloning) that shares the same Title. You can edit this new publication's name ("title"), but in the Content section you'll see the shared Title.

So if you add a translation via "Add New Pub", you don't want to insert the English Title as additional content. Rather, you want to just add the pub normally, then later "Merge" the newly-created non-English Title with the existing English Title, keeping the English one. This will make the publication share the common English Title, while keeping the non-English name/"title". This is what I did with your submissions above, removing the extra added English titles.

If you add a translation via "Clone This Pub", you avoid the merge step. You will get a Publication that shares the English Title, and you can change the Publication's name/"title" to the translated form. You can try this -- pick any publication and "Clone This Pub", and you'll see how the information appears in the editing screen; you'll be able to edit the Publication's title (the "Title" at the top), but the shared Title will appear in the Content section, and you won't be able to edit it.

All that said, you didn't do anything wrong, and moderators are here both to help you out and to make sure the information ends up recorded the way it's supposed to be -- the most important thing is to get the information in the first place. So don't hesitate to add or modify things; we appreciate the contributions very much. --MartyD 12:54, 2 January 2011 (UTC)
