Hi Bob,

Are both titles with this name in SPWAO Showcase #5, 1985 short stories or is one of them interior art? Thanks! Annie 01:30, 17 April 2021 (EDT)

:Garrison is an artist, of course.  Thanks, Annie. Bob 10:53, 17 April 2021 (EDT)

:: Anytime. Oh, and I added the link to your latest archive over on your archive page so it does not get lost :) You missed a / when you created the page. We can move it if you want - let me know. :) Annie 16:09, 19 April 2021 (EDT)

:::Annie, once again you save my butt. Given that there are only two slashes, it's incredible that I missed one. Bob 17:23, 19 April 2021 (EDT)

:::: Do you want me to move it so it looks like the older ones? Annie 17:46, 19 April 2021 (EDT)

:::::Oh, sure. Bob 19:22, 19 April 2021 (EDT)

:::::: Done. You missed the whole "/Archive/" bit in the middle, not just a / as I thought at a first glance (it was late and I probably needed new glasses or more coffee... or both). :) So it appeared as the Talk page of a guy called BiomassbobAug2020-Apr2021 instead of an archive page nested under your page. :) Page moved. Link in your archive page fixed. The old linkage removed. Or as I said when I added the link the other day Just your helper elf assisting with the missing link. :) Annie 19:34, 19 April 2021

You know, actually that makes more sense than just missing a punctuation mark.  Thank you again, Annie.  You are indeed a useful little elf. Bob 20:02, 19 April 2021 (EDT)

Rejection
The note I added along with the cover image for Jeremy Leven's Creator isn't "irrelevant"; he wrote the script for the movie version. The many other movie-related notes I've added weren't rejected. --Username 15:48, 19 April 2021 (EDT)

:Maybe a different moderator will approve it then.  But this site is about books, not movies so it doesn't matter who wrote a movie. Bob 17:21, 19 April 2021 (EDT)

Problem is I don't know who will be the moderator working at the time I add an edit, so in the future if I enter relevant movie-related info and you happen to be the moderator at the time, just leave it for the next moderator to approve instead of rejecting it. I've copy-pasted the cover image URL into another edit without the "irrelevant" note. --Username 18:27, 19 April 2021 (EDT)

:I suggest you just leave out comments about movies. Bob 18:58, 19 April 2021 (EDT)

Someone should have said the same to the hundreds of other editors whose names I've come across in the short time I've been editing here who added movie-related notes and links to ISFDB records that were approved by moderators. --Username 23:21, 19 April 2021 (EDT)

:Yep. Bob 23:27, 19 April 2021 (EDT)

I mentioned above that if you are moderating my edits and see info you don't think should be there, to just pass on by without rejecting and let other moderators who have no problem with the info approve them as they have so often in the past; I'll probably start adding less of them and only stick to adding info if the original author was involved somehow with the movie. Also, if you look at the date on that Mary Reilly edit it was before we had our little discussion, so I don't know what I'm expected to do about that; if you find any others just ignore them. --Username 15:38, 20 April 2021 (EDT)

:My friend, you're an idiot to push any monitor this way.  I'm always going to reject any edits adding anything about movies.  I will not pass.  Nothing you say will change that.  When I first started editing, I would argue at times with the decisions of monitors.  As a result, it was many years before I was invited to become a monitor myself. Just drop it and get on with life.Bob 16:36, 20 April 2021 (EDT)

Robots and Empire
While verifying Robots and Empire I saw this note "Jacket design by Barclay Shaw" on rear flap, the artwork is also 'signed'. If he was just the jacket designer we should remove him from the cover art bucket. However, "signed" would indicate he did the artwork. Question, Is it really signed. On my book, I can see two circles within a circle to the bottom right of the V in Asimov. Is that the signature? I'm holding off verifying or making any changes till I hear from you. John Scifibones 18:00, 19 April 2021 (EDT)

:John, I just don't know.  I looked at some of his other cover art (F&SF covers), and didn't find that symbol.  But my guess would be that he was the artist, although maybe of the faces rather than the whole cover which isn't very elaborate art. Bob 19:21, 19 April 2021 (EDT)

:: I know there is currently an emphasis on this point that was not the case in the past. Do you want to make the call, solicit other opinions? I'll go with whatever you think. Thanks, John Scifibones 20:04, 19 April 2021 (EDT)

::: John, I'd just let what's there stand.  I don't feel strongly about it.  I didn't enter that information myself, just went with it, and would tend to keep going with it. Bob 20:06, 19 April 2021 (EDT)

Rejected Edit
As per this, please undelete the rejection in order not to loose valuable information that took me some time to collect. The next time that you have doubts about one of my submission, it'd be better to put it on hold and to contact me (I'm here every day) than to immediatly reject it. In this case, I confirm that the ISBN on book is as entered (as I wrote in the notes). AlainLeBris 04:00, 25 April 2021 (EDT)

Elite - series
Hello Bob. I note you approved my edits to place this and this into the "Elite (computer games)" series but strangely they don't show up in the list here Any chance that could happen at some point as they are one and the same series. --Mavmaramis 10:09, 28 April 2021 (EDT)

:I see what happened.  You used the series for the individual pub, which was a mistake (mea culpa).  You need to move the series to the Title Record, like the earlier examples.  The individual pub series is used where there are several pubs under the Title Record, but only one (or some) of the pubs are in the series, like a series by a particular publisher that does not apply to other pubs in the Title Record. I fixed it for you; look at the list now, and see where the series appears. Bob 10:24, 28 April 2021 (EDT)

::Thanks Bob. No clue what that all meant but glad it's fixed now. --Mavmaramis 01:02, 29 April 2021 (EDT)

Regarding rejected edit 4973950.  Except for the added numbers inside the parentheses on the interludes that is an exact listing of the TOC in the book.  They DO list every little piece.  If you still don't want it in there let me know on my talk page and I'll re-create it without the interludes.Jim 15:40, 28 April 2021 (EDT)

Re this. I really should have been thinking straight when I entered it and flagged it as "non genre" as per the back cover blurb "A book of designs and photographs for rock 'n' roll bands" so decidedly not speculative. --Mavmaramis 01:07, 29 April 2021 (EDT)

:Another concern: why would this item belong to ISFDB? It seems it is not connected to our field of speculative fiction. Christian Stonecreek 04:36, 29 April 2021 (EDT)

::If so then why are other non genre works included ? The author is obviously above threshold enough to have an entry. However if you feel that strongly and wish to delete it altogether I won't argue the point. --Mavmaramis 12:55, 29 April 2021 (EDT)

:::My feeling (without seeing the pub) is that it's likely art that could fit the genre.  Paper Tiger often publishes art that fits, but you have the pub, I'll respect your judgement.  I added the cover scan from Amazon, by the way, just to see what it looked like. Bob 17:19, 29 April 2021 (EDT)

:::: Sorry, I don't understand why should Storm Thorgerson (who worked in the field of rock & pop album covers amd has only a few entries of his work listed here) be above the threshold as author of speculative fiction? Christian Stonecreek 23:41, 29 April 2021 (EDT)

Barrayar
Bob, Quick question re: Barrayar . You show a page count of 373. Do you mind checking your copy? I think it should be 381. Or, if you exclude all the NESFA information, The Editor's Note ends on page 367. Let me know and I will submit an edit. thanks <b>John</b> <small>Scifibones</small> 17:32, 30 April 2021 (EDT)

P.S. I have been adding jacket desgn credit whenever I verify a pub (suggestion of another moderator). Do you want a notification and link every time?

:Looking back, if I were entering this pub today, I would say the page count was 363, and ignore the two later contents items.  The pages after that are real garbage ads and definitely should not be included in the page count.  If you want to delete the two last content items and reduce the page numbers, fine by me, go ahead.  I would never add the jacket design credit, but have no objection to it's addition.  Like I said before, takes all kinds.Bob 18:07, 30 April 2021 (EDT)

:: I agree with you, Submission 4975963 and 4975966 take care of it. If you want to okay them, I won't have to explain to another moderator. As far as design credit, I never used to include it. Annie asked me to because it would facilitate updating if we ever add a Cover Design can. <b>John</b> <small>Scifibones</small> 18:43, 30 April 2021 (EDT)

Mirror Dance
Bob, I imported  the title "Miles Vorkosigan/Naismith: His Universe and Times (Mirror Dance)" into Mirror Dance then made it the parent of  "Miles Vorkosigan/Naismith: His Universe and Times (Cetaganda)". I did this to make it consistent with how you handled the ensuing books.  Let me know is this is a problem and I will cancel it. == You have confused me ==

You rejected my change in cover art attribution for several Dan Brown Novels. Let's use The Lost Symbol for example. My pub note says "Jacket photograph © Murat Taner/Getty Images" (over) "Jacket design Michael J. Windsor". I then submitted an edit to remove the cover art attribution. It was approved. I then submitted the same edit edits for other pubs in the same title that use the same cover. Now you are rejecting those edits. I am following your instructions exactly. I'm confused. <b>John</b> <small>Scifibones</small>

Scifibones 06:58, 6 May 2021 (EDT)  P.S. I am trying to follow  Rules and standards discussions #When is a cover designer the cover artist ?

:Rejected submission 4977796 states the following reason for rejection "I don't know what the cover looks like, but sometimes attributing the cover to a designer is correct. For example, many of the 1632, Inc. books are made up of photos and art and there is a cover designer, not a cover artist.". I pulled 20 HC first printings and 5 TP first printings from the 163x series you mentioned. Every one of the HC's list an illustration credit and a design credit. The 5 TP (these were not produced in HC) list a cover art credit and no design credit. <b>John</b> <small>Scifibones</small> 08:15, 6 May 2021 (EDT).

::I understand your confusion.  I rejected your removal of Murat Taner as the cover artist and I still think simply removal of credit is not correct.  All of these covers should be credited to the designer, Michael J. Windsor, not left without credit for the cover.  Taner apparently took the photo of the capitol building, and Windsor used that photo in his jacket design.

::And you looked at the wrong books, I did NOT suggest covers in the 163x series, I referred to books published by 1632, Inc.  Many of the former were published by Baen or Ring of Fire Press.  Laura Givens is credited as the cover art designer for many of the books published by 1632, Inc., no one is credited as the cover artist.  Laura did what Windsor did, took someone else's photo, added some other design elements, and came up with the cover.  I personally never cite the cover designer along with the cover artist.  I don't mind if others do so, but I will either cite the cover artist (if given) or cite the cover designer if the cover is made up of elements rather than a piece of art executed by a single artist.  Bob 12:51, 6 May 2021 (EDT)

::: This is beside the point anyway.  Address the points in my first paragraph. the first 2 submissions you rejected were for pubs of the Lost Symbol. The next 2 were for Inferno. You can see the pub notes and why the cover art credit was pulled. Do you agree I followed your recommendation ? Does approval or rejection depend on whomever happens to review an edit?  This is not personal. It is however quite frustrating.<b>John</b> <small>Scifibones</small> 13:10, 6 May 2021 (EDT)  I didn't see your first paragraph, only the second. I see you reasoning now. 13:17, 6 May 2021 (EDT)

:I saw you had to fix something, Did I mess up? 14:27, 12 May 2021 (EDT)

::No, your changes were fine.  I removed the pub series information from the notes, since that information was also under the pub title already.  That note was added in 2011 by Bluesman, two years before I verified the pub.  I have no clue why he thought it was necessary to add duplicate information like that. Added design credit & removed pub series info from Foreigner. Do you want me to keep informing you of these minor edits? <b>John</b> <small>Scifibones</small>10:13, 13 May 2021 (EDT)

:Only inform me of edits to pubs where I'm the only verifier and that involve changes, not just additions.  I like to learn, too. Bob 11:55, 13 May 2021 (EDT)

Middlemore
You rejected the Middlemore edit; the following edit imported the correct title and name and date already on ISFDB so I was deleting the old entry; the 2 Darkness Rising anthologies I added edits for recently both had confusing entries for an old reprint under wrong titles and names and dates, so maybe this needs others to have a look at it to make sure I did it right. --Username 16:20, 13 May 2021 (EDT)

: Soon after I wrote this JLaTondre accepted a whole bunch of my edits including adding the imported Middlemore story, so I wrote him to explain the confusion and I assume he'll be looking at all this and doing whatever needs to be done; only thing is maybe you can unreject the Middlemore edit and accept it so there won't be two Middlemores in the same book. --Username 19:47, 13 May 2021 (EDT)

:: I realized the problem when I went to the next submission.  I suppose I could have rescinded the rejection, but I didn't bother.  I suggest that next time, you either explain why you are deleting the story, or import the story first, then delete the old entry.  Just delete the old entry now. I'd do it for you, but you didn't bother to flag the pub for me. Bob 20:14, 13 May 2021 (EDT)

Hi Bob,

We standardize "Tordotcom" as "Tor.com" as a publisher name. Any reason why you changed it here thus splitting this single book out from all the books from the publisher? Annie 12:27, 24 May 2021 (EDT)

:Damn, Annie, I had no idea of the standardization.  I just entered the publisher's name from the pub.  Fixed. Bob 13:39, 24 May 2021 (EDT)

:: Yeah, they have it spelled out in the last years. We MAY want to reverse the way we standardize or split it I guess but I am a bit tired of chasing these so I just add books for the moment. Thanks! :) Annie 13:58, 24 May 2021 (EDT)

:::I think I would standardize it at Tor and forget about it.  It's like Del Rey / Ballentine, which should just be Del Rey, or maybe Ballentine, but not both. Bob 15:11, 24 May 2021 (EDT)

Thanks, <b>John</b> <small>Scifibones</small> 10:49, 25 May 2021 (EDT)

:I understand your reaction, but I'd leave the Currey reference alone.  It's not a rule, but most users like to know that the pub is in Currey.  If the pub is verified, obviously the verifier knows the statement is there.Bob 14:35, 25 May 2021 (EDT)

A quick question about your verified Eldritch Tales, V2n6, 2019. Is the last name of William C. Rasmusson spelled that way or is the "o" a typo? The reason I am asking is that we have a record for William C. Rasmussen, whose stories appear in similar publications. TIA! Ahasuerus 11:59, 26 May 2021 (EDT)

:Surprisingly, this time it's not a typo.  That's the spelling, both over the story and in the ToC. I wouldn't be surprised if the editor spelled the name wrong. I'll ask him. Bob 19:36, 26 May 2021 (EDT)

:: Thanks for looking into it! Ahasuerus 20:05, 26 May 2021 (EDT)

:::No reply.  But since Rasmussen wrote a number of stories for volume 1 of <i>Eldritch Tales</i>, and since the editorials in volume 2 say that a number of authors from volume 1 contributed to volume 2, I think it's safe to assume that the editor made a mistake in spelling Rasmussen's name, and I will make Rasmusson a variant name. Bob, The pub I created Here is not the first edition. I don't know exactly what printing it is (see pub note), only that the print code makes it one of the early printings. Hi Bob,

You may want to be a bit more careful around that error message when you see it - while it can be a legitimate one (multiple printings and so on), it often is just a real duplicate (as here): you approved on 7/6 after having approved this on 7/5. :) Even if you decided to approve the later one because of the contents, the contents should have been then moved into the older record and then the new one deleted so we do not have a duplicate. == David A. Goodman essay in SFWA Bulletin Summer 1978 ==

Hi Bob, you have this pub verified, and I've come across a bit of a headscratcher with one of the contents.

David A. Goodman has an essay in this pub, but according to Wikipedia, he was born in 1962, which would make him an exceptionally precocious contributor to the SFWA Bulletin at age 16?  (I've submitted an edit to add those birth details.)  My vague understanding of how SFWA works - in the present day at least - is that members (and thus presumably contributors to their magazines?) have to be published writers, which makes me even more dubious this is the same person.  (Although by that token, I'd have expected him to have some other earlier entries in the database?)

His other pubs in the database are all from the past decade - he has another Trek book due this month, which is how I stumbled across this - although Wikipedia indicates he's worked mostly as a TV writer.

Any ideas? Thanks ErsatzCulture 15:33, 2 September 2021 (EDT)

:Good catch.  My best guess is that this guy is the father of the young man currently contributing speculative fiction. He appears to be a published psychologist.  The article says "to be continued" at the end, but no continuation appears in the next issue.  My best guess is that the Goodman in the SFWA Bulletin was not a member of SFWA, but is likely the father of the current writer.  The two Goodmans are clearly different men. Call the one in the Bulletin David A. Goodman (I) to differentiate him from the other; whether to speculate on his relationship the the author is up to you. == More Ghosts & Scholars ==

Hi Bob -

You're the only verifier of More Ghosts & Scholars.  Reginald3 has this as an anthology.  I think it's fine to leave it as a fanzine (as it is listed in Miller/Contento).  Howeve, while Reginald lists Pardoe as co-publisher with Haunted Library, he specifically notes that she is "as anonymous editor".  Worldcat again lists Pardoe as co-publisher, but lists no editor.  Could you double check if she has an actual editor credit?  If not, we should consider changing the editor credit to "uncredited" and then variant the record to Pardoe.  Could you also check how the publishers are listed?  We have publisher records for both Pardoe and Haunted Library, but none with a combined credit.  Thanks. --Ron ~ RtraceTalk 21:00, 6 September 2021 (EDT)

:"MORE GHOSTS AND SCHOLARS is published by Rosemary Pardoe, The Haunted Library, 11B Cote Lea Square...."  This is unquestionably a fanzine, anyone who calls it an anthology is an idiot.  There is no editor credit, but Pardoe is obviously the editor and owns the copyright.  She also reviewed two of the three pubs in the issue.  Go ahead and variant if you wish, but I wouldn't.Bob 11:50, 7 September 2021 (EDT)

Bob,

If you are going to be approving things like this, you need to edit it after that to make it at least a partially viable record - which means adding source where you verified that the book indeed exist and at least some ID (ISBN, ASIN, Goodreads ID, BN ID and so on or a link to a site where the book is found). If you do not plan on doing that, either reject the book, put it on hold and wait for the user to come back with an answer (won't happen with this specific editor) or leave it for someone else to approve. Thanks! Annie 14:00, 23 September 2021 (EDT)

:Agreed.  Clearly, the source was Amazon, and I did ask the submitter to add that info.  No ISBN given, I added the price and ASIN, which I should have asked the submitter to add. Mea culpa. This editor never learns and is more trouble than he's worth. Bob 17:59, 23 September 2021 (EDT)

:: But that editor won't come and update the book - they add good books so I am willing to fix them if need be but they won't learn the pb/tp difference or add sources or IDs. We know that. They will come back and add contents often but not the rest. So if you approve their submissions, you need to fix them. Leaving them like that, knowing that they will never be fixed ends up with more issues downstream - duplicate books, ratty records and frustration when people add the book again and again. :) Annie 18:16, 23 September 2021 (EDT)

:::::: I debated that one.  Given the price and the 8", I figured pb.  But the 5" is too big for pb, so tp is fine. The other is an e-book only. Bob 09:37, 24 September 2021 (EDT)

::::::: Ignore the order and look for the largest number - the 5 is irrelevant. 8x5 is a standard tp as much as 9x6 is. You will very rarely see mmpb outside of the big publishers these days. PS: The help page says "...as tall as 7.25" (19 cm) or as wide/deep as 4.5" (11.5 cm) use "tp"." Even the tall mass market paperbacks at 7.5 are recorded as tp in the system. == Isaac Asimov Magazine, #06 ==

Hi Bob,

::::

See my note here. This is most likely not a June issue of the magazine unless you have a source I missed somewhere. Using the English numbering for the Asimov's international editions does not really work - in a lot of cases the international edition is not even an issue of the English one but a selection of it. And when the month/date is unclear, we need to use the issue number instead. :) Annie 20:11, 27 September 2021 (EDT)

:The date was a guess based on the number 6 and the 1990 date.  It bothered me that the size was pb for a magazine.  Given that the number of pages was so much greater than the U.S. edition, I'm amazed that the content is only a selection of the U.S. edition.  One problem I had was that I couldn't trace the web sites because they had pop-ups in Portuguese that I couldn't read so didn't know how to respond to.  I changed the pub back to the original submission except citing the source in the notes. Bob 10:28, 28 September 2021 (EDT)

:: They sometimes do selections from multiple issues into a single one. Think of it as a franchise, not as straight translations of specific issues sometimes. For the pop ups on these pages - click anywhere outside of them and they disappear. :)  Annie 11:19, 28 September 2021 (EDT)

::: And then it's possible that these aren't magazines at all but anthologies (that present story selections), just like this series, with one example (which would fit to the paperback format). Christian Stonecreek 11:51, 28 September 2021 (EDT)

:::: They are treated as a magazine in any Portuguese media I can see so magazines they are. Just because they are a selection of translations does not necessarily make them anthologies - that’s a common way to assemble magazines outside of the big languages. ::::: That needn't to have consequences for us: The German publications of the Perry Rhodan series are referred to as NOVELs in all German sources (including the publisher and Perrypedia), but are magazines for us (which contain only NOVELLAs of around 30,000 words in length). That's because it features also interviews, essays, reviews, illustrations, and a letter column: see this latest example.

:::::: There is a difference between defining novellas vs novels and the line between magazines and anthologies. The first is well defined. The second had always been a bit murky. In any way - that’s not a conversation to have in this thread. If you want to recategorize, do some research and post on Community your findings and proposal and we all can discuss. And not all magazines features interviews and so on - different cultures and publishing practices exist around the world. :) Annie 13:39, 28 September 2021 (EDT)

Bob,

Regardless of what an external site may be saying, books in 1972 could not have had ISBN13 because noone had invented it yet. That's why we have the nice yellow warning about it. I fixed it here, here and here. So even when the external site uses ISBN13, please convert to ISBN10 and use that if the book is pre-2007 - different sites have different policies on what they are using and ours is to use the ISBN that can be on the book :) Thanks! Bob,

You had been adding all the serials in this series (I know it had been awhile back but I am clearing cleanup reports so just found them). That's not how serials work - all of these need to be varianted into a work that contains the full text and then the full text work gets into a series. Can you please fix these? If you are not sure how to fix, let me know and I can assist. Thanks! Annie 14:00, 8 October 2021 (EDT)

:I don't know how to do this.  I suppose I could make each story a collection that is part of the series, then each numbered piece shortfiction (short story) in the collection.  It seems to me the order of the pieces in the pub should be maintained.  But I don't see what variants have to do with this. Bob 15:31, 8 October 2021 (EDT)

:: A SERIAL is part of a story or a novel (or a complete novel inside of a magazine). Which means that a SERIAL is always varianted into a NOVEL or a SHORTFICTION. So if these are SERIALS, they need to be varianted into a title record that contains the full text of the full novel/story (regardless if it was ever published as a single story/novel). Alternatively, they need to be converted to short stories instead (see how Cherryh's split novella was recorded here for example). And to stay with the examples, you can see how a serial is here. But you cannot have a free standing SERIAL entry. Annie 15:44, 8 October 2021 (EDT)

::::Ah, thanks, that clears thing up.  Completed.  Please check for me. Do I need to make the serial parts not related to the series individually? Bob 14:58, 9 October 2021 (EDT)

::::: When you variant a title, the variant loses its series designation - it flows up. There is only one case where you need to clear it manually - when the two works were in different series. :) So all good. I’d personally make these two poems over there also serials and add a note explaining that they are actually poems (so the thing looks more ordered ) but either way works. == Feghoot Naming ==

Hi Bob

I'm looking at the early Ferdinand Feghoot stories published in F&SF.  We currently have the story in the August 1958 issue with the title "Through Time and Space with Ferdinand Feghoot: VIII".  Despite the note in this site (which I believe is the official home of the magazine), Miller/Contento, and more importantly, my copy has the title as simply "Through Time and Space with Ferdinand Feghoot".  There is no numbering on the title page nor in the table of contents.  I suspect that the earlier F&SF stories don't have a number as well, though they did begin numbering them with the November 1958 issue (if Miller/Contento is correct).  I see you've verified the earlier issues that contain these stories, but it you don't feel like pulling them, I've ordered nearly all the issues with Feghoots that I am missing.  Ordinarily when we have a title repeated across issues, we disambiguate it with the magazine title in parentheses.  Thus, I think we should change the title of this story to "Through Time and Space with Ferdinand Feghoot (F&SF, August 1958)".  As I obtain the additional issues, I would make similar title changes.  I don't know how the numbered titles were introduced in our records.  I'm sure it happened before either of us verified these issues.  Perhaps that's how they are reflected in the Advent collection.  Please let me know if you have thoughts on this.  Thanks.  --Ron ~ RtraceTalk 08:13, 10 October 2021 (EDT)

I am trying to chase down this illustration. According to the magazine record and an editor, it does not belong to Finlay but it is connected in these two books so... is there any notes that can talk about misidentifying or anything like this? Any chance that it was actually the one from "Wonder Stories, 1957" and not the one in "Thrilling Wonder Stories, October 1950" first (aka that we misconnected that 1950 images and the Finlay ones are only in 1957 and later (even though it is a reprint so it should not happen but...)? Or something like that? Thanks! Annie 05:55, 22 November 2021 (EST)

:The illustration has Finlay's signature.  Both books credit Finlay and cite the 1950 publication.  Gerry de la Ree published his seven books of Finlay illustrations using his own collection of Finlay material, and he obviously thought the illustration was from 1950.  That may be related to when he acquired the illustration, but there is no way to really tell.  If that illustration is in the 1950 pulp, it's Finlay.  I can supply a scan of the illustration, but I don't know how to do that except as an attachment to an e-mail. Amazon Image Links

Please remember when using Amazon images, the link needs to be edited to remove the underscores and everything between. The moderator screen will give a warning when these are present and they get added to a clean-up report that others than need to handle. A one-off I would just fix without notice, but you had quite a few in the last week. Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 12:02, 30 July 2020 (EDT)

Thank you for this information. I truly did not know how to edit the links. I've seen the warning, of course, but didn't know how to handle it. I really appreciate you letting me know. Bob 14:57, 30 July 2020 (EDT)
One thing to keep in mind is that yellow warnings generally mean "This is not an expected value. The submission should not be approved until the issue is resolved to the reviewing moderator's satisfaction." Sometimes it means putting the submission on hold and asking the submitting editor to clarify the intent of the submission. Other times it means asking the developer (me at the moment) to see if the ISFDB software needs to be changed in order to accommodate the submitted value, e.g. if Amazon's URLs have changed or if we have been given permission to link to a new Web site. Ahasuerus 18:00, 30 July 2020 (EDT)
Bob, if you see a warning (or anything else) that makes no sense to you, just reach out and ask - I, for one, will be more than happy to help - and I am pretty sure most of the moderators will as well. And if you rather not do it on the site, my mail is set for receiving via the email link on the profile. :) Annie 15:04, 30 July 2020 (EDT)
Annie, thank you for the offer, and I'll take you up on it. Right now I need help (again) archiving my user talk. Somehow, despite the instructions, I manage to mess this up when I try. Bob 16:36, 30 July 2020 (EDT)
Do you want me to do it and the step by step or just the step by step? Annie 16:39, 30 July 2020 (EDT)
Let's try the second. Bob 16:46, 30 July 2020 (EDT)

(unindent)

 • Go to your archives page: here and click edit.
 • Copy the last line to the bottom and edit the dates range - by adding for example "User_talk:Biomassbob/Archive/Sep2019-July2020". No spaces, dots and so on and make sure the format looks like the previous lines and save the page.
 • Open a new tab in your browser and go to the archive page. Go to the address bar (it should read http://www.isfdb.org/wiki/index.php/User_talk:Biomassbob/Archive
 • Add at the end of the address bar the date expression you added in a previous step (/Sep2019-July2020) in my example and press enter or load. It should open a page that has the following text on it: "There is currently no text in this page, you can search for this page title in other pages or edit this page.". Click on edit - the standard one on top or the one in the message.
 • Open your Talk page for editing in a new tab and start moving messages (cut from the Talk page, paste in the new page).
 • When done, save both your Talk page and this new page.
 • If you reload the Archive page now, the link we left there in the second page is active and should lead to this new page.

If you mess up somewhere, do not worry, everything is fixable. Annie 17:09, 30 July 2020 (EDT)

Wow, it actually worked! Thanks a bunch, Annie. Bob 17:36, 30 July 2020 (EDT)
Anytime! Annie 17:53, 30 July 2020 (EDT)

David Brin / The River of Time

I have compared my copy of The River of Time against the ISFDb pub record and would like to make some changes. You are the only active PV for this pub so I am running them past you first. Please advise whether you are happy for me to proceed with these changes.
1) Delete the statement "Signed by Brin on the title page". My copy is not signed so it seems that whichever editor wrote this statement has a copy that was signed post publication.
2) Add Locus1 as the source of the publication month.
3) There are two stories whose titles in the book (both on contents page and first page of story) differ from the pub record. "The Fourth Vocation of George Gustaf" should be "The 4th Vocation of George Gustaf". Also, "Toujours Voir" should be "Toujour Voir".
I am a new editor and am not sure how to go about changing these story titles. I presume variants need to be created but these stories also appear in other publications and I do not know how to determine which title should be the canonical one and which the variant. "Toujour" is a misspelling, so maybe the title should be left as "Toujours Voir" with a note added regarding the misspelling. I see that you are a moderator, so can you please advise me what to do? If you would prefer me to raise the question on the Help Desk, no problem, just let me know. Thanks. Teallach 16:34, 12 February 2022 (EST)

I didn't enter the original data, and when I PV someone else's entry, I sometimes don't check the data very carefully. Mea culpa. Delete the signature line, tell the moderator that neither your copy nor mine is signed. Add the source of the date. No explanation needed. Correct the spelling of "Toujour Voir", tell the monitor you corrected the spelling. Change the title of "The 4th Vocation of George Gustaf", explain to the moderator you corrected the title that is in the pub, and that you will variant the title to "The Fourth..." once the changes you have submitted are approved. Once the first set of changes have been approved, go to "The Fourth...", copy the number at the end of the source (http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/title.cgi?40427) "40427" in this case, go to "The River of Time", then to "Make this title a variant" and enter the number in the first line. I don't know why the editor changed the title in the pub, but that sometimes happens.
Also note that the same mistakes in the spelling occur in the 400 copy fancy version of this pub. I suspect this is the version that was signed, which is suggested, but not clearly stated. You should also correct the spelling errors on that copy the same way you do the trade edition.
Good catches, by the way. Glad to have an editor like you join us. Bob 20:23, 12 February 2022 (EST)
I'll make all the changes to the trade ed. Think it will take 3 submissions. Will let you know when all done. I will then inform the PV of the limited ed and between us we will arrange for corresponding changes to be made to that pub record. Thank you for your kind final paragraph. Teallach 12:19, 13 February 2022 (EST)

Fane

For Fane, would you object if I added the following before I PV?
Change page count to [8]+311
Add "First Timescape Books printing August, 1981" and the printer's key
Add essay title "Racial/Political Groupings on the Planet Fane" for page [7]
Thanks! Phil 10:04, 13 February 2022 (EST)

Phil, I have no big objection to changing the page numbers, but think it's silly. You could add the title and put it on 'bp', before pagination. Adding the Timescape statement isn't really needed; the date of publication is already given. More information isn't necessarily helpful. Bob 10:50, 13 February 2022 (EST)
