Blind Paw/Pew

Hi, could you double-check the spelling of "Blind Paw" in your copy of "Dreamtigers"? In most editions it is "Pew". Also, "Martin Fiero" (usually "Fierro"), "To Leopoldo Legones" (usually "Lugones"), and "Androgué" (might be "Adrogué"). Thanks! --Vasha77 12:26, 18 September 2016 (UTC)

Thanks! You are right on all counts. Corrected.--Rkihara 15:57, 18 September 2016 (UTC)

The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, May 1998

Hello, I've changed the authorship of The Questing Mind from Michael Swanwick to Kristine Kathryn Rusch in this issue. Hauck 15:29, 23 September 2016 (UTC)

A. McWilliams / Alden McWilliams

Hi Ron. Alden McWiliams (Al McWilliams) is the same person as A. McWiliams, as seen here and other websites. I've pseudonymed A. McWilliams to Alden but that leaves a string of titles that normally would need to be varianted. So my question is: You have verified titles attributed to A. McWilliams on this list. If that was by actual credit, they should be varianted to Alden but if it was by a signature only, the name should be changed to Alden McWilliams, as I see it by our rules. Here are the ones you've verified, could you check them and make any changes? Sorry to burden you with this but I thought it was the right thing to do to. I'm sending this out to RTrace, Krang and MLB, who have different issues with the same situation.
Black Priestess of Varda (2) in Planet Stories, Winter 1947

I've checked the reprint of these in Pulp Vault and they are credited by signature alone. Feel free to change the title if MLB agrees. I'll leave this same note on his page. --Ron ~ RtraceTalk 14:01, 25 September 2016 (UTC)

Me, Myself and I in Planet Stories, Winter 1947
In His Image in Planet Stories, Winter 1948
The Little Monsters Come (2) in ditto.
SOS Aphrodite in Planet Stories, Summer 1949
Stalemate in Space (3) in ditto.
Let the Ants Try (UNCREDITED NOW BUT REPRINT SHOWS A. MCWILLIAMS ART) in Planet Stories, Winter 1949
The Dead-Star Rover in ditto.
The Night Has a Thousand Eyes in ditto.
The Enormous Word in Planet Stories, Summer 1950
Patch in Planet Stories, Fall 1950
Strange Exodus in ditto.
The Last Two Alive in Planet Stories, November 1950

Larry Sternig and William Campbell Gault

I'm looking into a new editor's revelation that Larry Sternig was a real person and collaborated with Gault on some things. In your verified Planet Stories, Winter 1945 is a short story Venusian Invader, credited to Sternig, and we have that as a variant of that same title but credited solely to Gault. Is there any other information in the magazine that might indicate whether Gault had any hand in it? I am pursuing the other pubs/verifiers. Thanks. --MartyD 11:07, 29 September 2016 (UTC)

Another one is Breath of Beelzebub in Planet Stories, Winter 1946. --MartyD 11:16, 29 September 2016 (UTC)

And one more: Total Recall in Planet Stories, Fall 1946. --MartyD 11:27, 29 September 2016 (UTC)

No info in Planet Stories, but a lot of stuff on the web. Find a Grave: Born Aug 12, 1908 died Aug. 30, 1999, Waukesha, Wisconsin. Writer turned literary agent, Sternig & Byrne Literary agency. The ISFDB lists an obit in Locus, July 99. Gault is listed as co-author for several detective stories.--Rkihara 16:18, 1 October 2016 (UTC)
Thanks. I am going to break the pseudonym relationship. It seems to be an outright mistake. --MartyD 01:59, 3 October 2016 (UTC)

Dreamtigers again

I have gotten hold of a copy of the 1964 U. Texas edition, and found that some of the titles are different from what you put when you entered your edition. Would you be kind enough to check the following and see if they're really what the Dutton ed. has (if so, I'll create separate variants).

  • Martin Fierro, or Martín Fierro?
  • On the Beginning of the Study of Anglo-Saxon Grammar, or On Beginning the Study of Anglo-Saxon Grammar?
  • Appendix: Some Facts About the Life of Jorge Luís Borges, or Appendix: Some Facts in the Life of Jorge Luís Borges?

Thanks... --Vasha77 04:45, 15 October 2016 (UTC)

Thanks! Corrected all. In the Case of Martín Fierro, the diacritic was difficult to see on my computer. It would help to point out its suspected lack or presence in these cases.--Rkihara 16:27, 16 October 2016 (UTC)
I certainly agree that those accented i's are a pain in the neck. Some books use a typeface where they are easy to see, others less so; they are nearly invisible in the font that my computer uses to display the ISFDB. I wonder if it would be doable for the DB to use a non-default font that's more readable.
By the way, you could have just edited the title records for those stories instead of creating new records, then both publications would have been automatically updated. --Vasha77 17:34, 16 October 2016 (UTC)
I only corrected the one I verified, though it probably would have been okay. Changing all versions could cause more problems.--Rkihara 18:43, 16 October 2016 (UTC)
The other pub was the one I verified, which I.'ve updated now. Thanks again for looking into this. --Vasha77 19:40, 16 October 2016 (UTC)

[A]The Graveyard Heart

Hi. Sorry for the form letter. I'm doing a shotgun to several moderators/primary verifiers. See this submission. I believe the edit is correct and the existing title is a typo, but with so many verifiers and publications, I'm looking for a few primary confirmations. Thanks. --MartyD 02:28, 14 November 2016 (UTC)

The entry for Fantastic, March 1964, is a typo. The edit appears to correct. I have the transient verification, which I used in lieu of Primary 2 before it existed.--Rkihara 04:14, 14 November 2016 (UTC)

Amazing Stories, cover artists

I expanded the name of the cover artist from "Paul" to "Frank R. Paul", based on the citations in Miller & Contento (etc.) to your pv'd issues of Nov. 1926, Dec. 1926, and April 1966. Chavey 03:17, 26 November 2016 (UTC)

I see now that "Paul" had already been aliased to "Frank R. Paul", so I changed those credits back. Chavey 06:01, 26 November 2016 (UTC)

I expanded the name of the cover artist from "Barber" to "Tom Barber", based on Miller & Contento (etc.) for Amazing Stories for March, 1976, Nov. 1978, and Feb. 1979 Chavey
In keeping with the approach for "Paul", I reverted these changes and created a pseudonym from "Barber" to "Tom Barber". Chavey 06:01, 26 November 2016 (UTC)
Could you re-check the cover artist for March 1977? It's currently listed as "Bierley", but Miller & Contento claim that it's Steve Hickman. Thanks, Chavey 04:26, 26 November 2016 (UTC)
It's credited to Bierley in the TOC, but there is what may be a stylized signature in the lower left corner that may read "S(?)". It's clearly visible in the scanned images for both links that you provided.--Rkihara 16:48, 26 November 2016 (UTC)
Those two images are both the same, so the "S" has the same visibility. Here's a brightness/contrast enhanced version of that "S":
S.Hickman_Stylized_S.jpg
Comparing this to the "S" rune we have on file seems fairly conclusive. I've set "Bierley" up as a pseudonym to Hickman, and added a publication note about this. Chavey 22:04, 26 November 2016 (UTC)

Amazing Stories issue links

Many years ago, you verified a whole bunch of issues of "Amazing Stories" that included the old fashioned linking note of the form:
<a href="http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?56370">Jan. 1950</a>←Feb. 1950→<a href="http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?56502">Mar. 1950</a>

(From the Feb. 1950 issue.) As discussed elsewhere, those links aren't really necessary anymore, because of the extensive use of the magazine grids to look at sequences of issue numbers. And, IMHO, they clutter up the publication notes. Would you mind if I removed those links from this magazine? Chavey 05:23, 26 November 2016 (UTC)

There were three or four of us doing this, though I put in the majority. We stopped entering the "Navbars" after a year or so. Why don't you repost this on the community portal, I won't oppose it if no one else objects. We must have entered 500-1000 of these across quite a few magazines, not just Amazing. I think they work better and are more convenient to use than the grid to scan through sequential issues.--Rkihara 17:03, 26 November 2016 (UTC)
I entered a few hundred of them myself, for Perry Rhodan, but I've lost my fondness for them. I'll search through Community Portal archives and see if I can find a discussion, and if not, I'll start one. Chavey 21:44, 26 November 2016 (UTC)

Willy Ley's 'They Were Dead'

Hi Ron. In your two verified titles here and here, the title "They Were Dead" by Willy Ley are showing up as duplicates for Ley. Are they the same? Thanks, Doug / Vornoff 01:38, 30 November 2016 (UTC)

The second is a short followup to the first essay having the exact same title. I'll disambiguate the second. Maybe by adding (followup to essay having same title, Ast. 06/1944)?--Rkihara 01:56, 30 November 2016 (UTC)

Christine Renard

You approved a number of Christine Renard variants by NrjPure faster than I could put them on hold. The parents and variants exactly match (title, author, and language). That should not be the case for variants (except in limited cases). I've asked NrjPure for clarification. Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 22:24, 30 November 2016 (UTC)

Sorry, asleep at the wheel.--Rkihara 22:30, 30 November 2016 (UTC)

Thrilling Wonder Stories, April 1937

I have listed the facsimile reprint of the pulp Thrilling Wonder Stories, April 1937 that you created. However, when I listed the facsimile I also added some letters from the letter section. If you want you can import them into your listing. Thanks for doing all the hard work first. MLB 21:58, 21 December 2016 (UTC)

Thanks, that saves me a bit of time. I'm in the process of entering letters into pubs that I didn't enter the first time around, since now I can better determine who should entered and who not.--Rkihara 22:13, 21 December 2016 (UTC)

Analog Science Fiction/Science Fact, September 1986

Hi Ron. The interior art titles on pp 86 and 108 for "Haiku for an Asteroid Scout" on your verified Analog Science Fiction/Science Fact, September 1986 are showing up as dupes on Jankus bibliography page. Shouldn't they be disambiguated? Thanks, Doug / Vornoff 04:59, 22 December 2016 (UTC)

Thanks! Done.--Rkihara 16:55, 26 December 2016 (UTC)

Capitalization

I have corrected the capitalization of words such as "an", "from", "with", "the" in titles of some of Ian Watson's works. This affects your verified publication org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?59082 Interzone, #75 September 1993]. In future, do you want to be notified of such capitalization regularizations? --Vasha 08:30, 10 January 2017 (UTC)

You've notified the wrong person. I have never verified an issue of Interzone. The issue in question was verified by Hauck. I don't need to be notified if your're making small corrections; typos, capitalization, and missing data.--Rkihara 17:07, 10 January 2017 (UTC)

Hello, There's perhaps something fishy with this letter, you may have mistyped the author or mislinked it (or it may be another Michael Lindsay). Can you have a look? Thanks. Hauck 08:39, 6 February 2017 (UTC)

Contento shows this letter is by A. D. Harvey writing as Michael Lindsay.--Rkihara 17:12, 6 February 2017 (UTC)
My worries are more situated here where you can see that only one item is varianted to Harvey. As there is no pseudonymistic link between Lindsay and Harvey the letter shows on one of our cleanup report but more worringly it may be improbable the Harvey wrote two Horror stories in 2015. Either all texts by Lindsay are by Heard, in this case you should create the pseudonymistic link and variant the two short stories, or there are two different Lindsays and in this case you should disambiguate the two "Michael Lindsay" involved and still set up the pseudonymistic link to the Harvey pseudonym. Thanks. Hauck 17:42, 6 February 2017 (UTC)
Harvey is still alive and he's still young enough to have written the two horror stories, although I'm not sure that he's the author. I'll make the pseudonymous connection and variant the two stories. Disambiguating them may cause more confusion later.--Rkihara 18:10, 6 February 2017 (UTC)
