Welcome!

Hello, Markjoseph125, and welcome to the ISFDB Wiki! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

Note: Image uploading isn't entirely automated. You're uploading the files to the wiki which will then have to be linked to the database by editing the publication record.

Please be careful in editing publications that have been primary verified by other editors. See Help:How to verify data#Making changes to verified pubs. But if you have a copy of an unverified publication, verifying it can be quite helpful. See Help:How to verify data for detailed information.

I hope you enjoy editing here! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will insert your name and the date. If you need help, check out the community portal, or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome! -- JLaTondre (talk) 08:13, 12 April 2020 (EDT)

The Far end of History

Hello. I wanted to let you know that you can directly submit an update of a (in this case) title record. Based on your Note to Moderator, I have updated the title recordThe Far End of History by replacing the existing note with your note, and updated the length from novella to novelette (as word count is a teeny weeny below the threshold for novella - 17,413 vs 17,500 words).
Alternatively, if you want to communicate with a moderator, either post on his/her talk page, or do head over to the help desk, or community portal. There are always some friendly moderators around that will gladly answer all of your questions. Again, (a belated) welcome! MagicUnk 12:12, 24 August 2020 (EDT)

Planet of the Small Men

Hello. I have your submission on hold for a moment, as I am wondering where you got the 23,000 word count estimate from? Thank! MagicUnk 12:33, 6 September 2020 (EDT)
Same for this one. Can you tell me where the word estimate for Probability Storm came from? Thanks! MagicUnk 14:44, 27 September 2020 (EDT)

Two months without an answer, so I've rejected your submissions. If you would like to resurrect them (which we can do now), post a message over at the Community Portal. Regards, MagicUnk 16:15, 16 November 2020 (EST)
Howdy! Sorry for the late response; I'm not used to looking at this page. I've posted a reply to the page you mentioned, the "Community Portal" Let me know if you have any other questions. Markjoseph125 12:05, 23 November 2020 (EST)
Copied your response from over at the Community Portal.
All of my length-based edits are labeled in the "note to moderator". I have a link to an on-line word counter, so if I have an e-text, I can get (and so indicate) an actual count. If I label it "by very careful estimate" I've used the method that I see mentioned several times on this page--I count an entire page, and then count the pages, carefully removing any quarter or half-pages that are blank, filled with an illustration, etc. A few of my older edits were labelled "careful estimate"; in those I only counted maybe half a page, and then calculated an average number of words per line, multiplying by the number of lines on the page to get a page count. But now I count a whole page. If I use any other method, I've indicated it (such as a story in an anthology being the same page count as another in the same anthology).
As a best practice, always carefully add the source (and date it if it's a (likely) transient source such as websites) of data you are entering in the notes field of either the title record or publication record, and not in the 'Notes to Moderators' field. Here, I was indeed wondering if you had a copy of the actual book. So, you could have added something like ' Word count by careful estimate based on actual book/pdf/ebook whatever '. As an aside, but related to that, if you have a publication in hand (or have an ebook), then consider primary verifying said publication record. Doing so indicates that you attest to the veracity of the data entered - I checked both records, and you didn't do that, did you? If you would have PV'd the pub record(s) I could have surmised that you had the actual book available and approve on that indirect evidence (which I was now lacking). Will you be re-submitting your word count, and add a note too? Thanks! MagicUnk 13:18, 23 November 2020 (EST)
OK, I can do that. I don't understand about "primary verifying," though. I figured that was for moderators (or their equivalent), and in any case I would have no idea how to do so. But all of my verifications are done from actual books and magazines (of which I own a substantial number ;-), except for a few e-texts. Markjoseph125 23:50, 24 November 2020 (EST)
But no: verification is for everyone who owns or has her/his hands on a copy of a given publication. From the help text: "When a publication is displayed, there is a link in the left navbar labelled "Verify this Pub". Clicking on the link brings up the verification screen, which allows you to tell the ISFDB that you have verified some or all of the bibliographic information on the publication record." and "we'd appreciate you making the effort to add any other information you have about the publication", especially information on edition & printing and sourcing (for example where the date of publication or the credit on art is from). Generally primary verification is for publications that you own a copy of, whereas transient primary verification is for those that you have only temporarily (for example you lended or plan to get rid of it quite soon). Belladonna Nights

Some minor note additions - details documented in Note to Moderators. Let me know if you would disagree. Regards, MagicUnk 10:53, 12 January 2022 (EST)

Adding story lengths

When you have the exact words number (or an approximation) such as here, just add them to the Notes field as well. I've added them on this one. :) Thanks! Annie (talk) 12:47, 14 November 2022 (EST)

Thanks. Will do. Markjoseph125 (talk) 12:38, 29 November 2022 (EST)
