O. W. Hopkinson vs. O. W. Hopkinson, Jr.

We have one story by O. W. Hopkinson and one story by O. W. Hopkinson, Jr.. These two stories appeared in Astounding Science Fiction within a few months of each other (April & September 1947). As you verified both issues, would you mind checking if they give any indication (like the intro to the second one mentioning the prior one) that these are the same person? Sturgeon's Case and the Dreamer

There's pretty good circumstantial evidence that this edition was published in 1977. The catalog numbers above and below this one were published that year. New Worlds issues #173 - 200

I'm trying to get a handle on the various formats/bindings that are currently being used in the database, and I've come across 29 records that use "large s/s" in the field. Can you take a moment to look at this issue and give a brief description of the magazine and its dimensions? If I understand correctly "s/s" means saddle-stapled, but I'm trying to narrow down whether these issues of New Worlds (numbers 173-200) may fall into one of the other more popular categories, e.g. bedsheet/A4/quarto (which are basically the same size: 8.5x11) or A5/octavo (5.5x8.5). I've discovered that SFE III says it went from the paperback ("pocketbook") size (after #172) to "a stapled quarto-size format, rising to A4-size with #179." Can you recommend "The Jewel-Hinged Jaw"?

I noticed that you own a copy of the "The Jewel-Hinged Jaw" (pub record). Can you recommend this book? A bit of background: The book has appeared on my radar because it contains Delany's "To Read The Dispossessed", and I have a keen interest in that novel. But on the other hand I have also seen warning voices, saying that the essay virtually dissects Le Guin's book. I am not a native English speaker, so I am a bit apprehensive about whether the essays are readable at all without a super-deep knowledge of the language. I've evoked the book here, but alas in French ;-). In a nutshell (and IMHO of course), the book is sometimes complex (but not at the language level more at the theoritical one) and in addition to its study of some feminist texts (Le Guin, Russ) it notably features Delany's very interesting approach of the protocols used when reading SF.Hauck 15:09, 7 December 2012 (UTC)

Poul Anderson's "Three Hearts and Three Lions": A Calypso in Search of a Rhyme

Hi Hervé, can you check Randall Garrett's Takeoff! for me? On page 235 there's a poem by Randall Garrett and Vicki Ann Heydron. The same poem is in The Best of Randall Garrett, but there it's one page of note bars with the text of the first verse, followed by a 4 page poem. In "Takeoff!", the review of "Three Hearts and Three Lions" starts on the same page as the poem. My question is, is the full poem in "Takeoff", or should this be two entries in "The Best of" (only the music is by Vicki Ann Heydron). It seems that there is the full poem in _Takeoff !_ (from page 235 to 238), on page 239 there are the note bars with the first verse. In fact the poem IS the review as per the short introduction "This is the only of these Reviews in Verse that...". Also "Three Hearts and Three Lions" is in quotes in the title. Hope that helps. Hal Clement Checklist questions.

Mhhutchins asked me to get in touch with you about <a href="http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?223985">A Hal Clement Checklist</a> to see if you could clear up some discrepancies as he has been unable to locate his copy. Here's what I sent him "The cover is different. The one in the database does not have "Notes Toward a Bibliography" on the cover. When you go dig yours out check a couple of things. Mine doesn't mention anything about being Drumm Booklet #2, the last item mentioned on the back page is #53 (The Nitrogen Fix) and the physical production is on heavy cardstock with lousy Xerography (the toner's not really set and the pages tend to stick together when stored)." My copy is also on heavy cardstock (all pages), doesn't mention its rank in the series, ends with #53 (but has an addenda on bottom of last page and, as indicated, a loose "Hal Clement Checklist Addendum" half sheet on lighter paper), is correctly printed (with numerous additions handwritten but printed) and has its edges badly trimmed. Its cover is the one that I've uploaded. Based on one of the handwritten and barely readable notes, pub date is later than january 83 (as it mentions this short story). I believe some over-enthusiastic editor who had later books in the series believed that all of them were the same publisher and series name, and unfortunately the moderator didn't question the changes. (Almost all of them have been secondary-verified by one editor.) I admit that it is strange for a series to change names in mid-stream, but it was probably prompted by Gollancz's creation of the VGSF imprint in 1987. Thanks for checking. Made a number of changes to your verified Conversations with Isaac Asimov:

• Added the "Introduction", "Chronology", and "Books by Isaac Asimov" essays
• On the page 14 interview, changed the interviewer's credit from "Luis" to "Lewis" per the interview title page
• On the page 18 interview, removed the quotes from around "Words and Their Masters" per the interview title page
• On the page 56 interview, added the ellipses to the title per the interview title page
• Removed Asimov from the publication credit per the book's title page
• Changed the dates on the interviews to match the first publications vs. this book's date

There is one entry that I had a question about as I'm not sure the best way to handle: "Science Fiction: The New Mythology" (on page 3) is an edited transcript of a forum discussion. It was first published in Extrapolation, May 1969. That publication credits it as an essay by H. Bruce Franklin, Darko Suvin, Isaac Asimov, and Frederik Pohl. That's not quite right as it was edited by Clareson and Sophia Morgen is also part of the panel. The two versions should be reconciled since it is a re-print. Any thoughts?

"A Conversation with Isaac Asimov" on page 21 is similar in that is also a forum discussion. However, I thought that was more clearly cut as (at least in Ingersoll's edited version) the others asked the questions and Asimov supplied all the answers. I suppose the other panel participants could be added the the interviewer list, but I thought capturing in them in the title notes was sufficient.

Hello Christian, in fact, the text in the french magazine is a translation of this novella first published in If (note that the french Galaxie used stories from a wide range of magazines in addition to Galaxy), as I've got both the original and the translation, I can confirm this fact. The novel here of the same title is an expansion of the aforementioned novella. To outrun doomsday here is an entirely different text (I have it also), only published as a novel (and matching your summary) so they're not variant of each other. Hi, regarding Mirrorshades : The Cyberpunk Anthology - that's a 10th printing, so no date is known. So I'm trying to narrow down a year or maybe even a month (eventually). At the end there is a Mail Order Form - which lists 3 books by Wilhelmina Baird : PsyKosis (0-441-00238-2/$5.99) - 1995-09 ; Clipjoint and Crashcourse. And at the top there's an excerpt of Locus review "A genuinely gifted newcomer" - which I assume is 1995-10 But that author's 1996-10 Book Chaos Come Again is not listed there (and they would definitely advertise the newest titles). So In Conclusion - this 10th printing of Mirrorshades : The Cyberpunk Anthology - should be after 1995-10 but before 1996-10. So should I put the date as just a year 1996 (most likely) ? Your suggestion seems correct as this novel is indeed put in fifth place in the 1998 omnibus that gather the "first" adventures of this hero (see here). I don't know who modified the data (even if I'm sole PV of the book). Note that the numbering of the series is quite erratic (and IMHO superfluous), see for example this pub with #2 on cover becoming #6 in the series list here. Note also that Setni started as "Galactic" detective then branched to "Temporal". Hauck 14:28, 23 April 2013 (UTC)

At this time Edit Title submissions do not tell the approving moderator whether the about-to-be-modified Title is referenced in a verified pub. There is an FR, FR 3597052, to implement this functionality.

That said, the "Setni" series and the "Alex Courville" series looked rather strange when I checked them the other night. Here is what the former looked like:

Since there were gaps in the numbering sequences (and some related titles were not listed at all), I figured that someone must have started organizing things, but never got a chance to finish the project. I went ahead and added the missing series numbers, but then I noticed that you had verified some of the affected pubs, so left a message on your Talk page to see if what I did made any sense :-)

If, as you said, there is no definite order to these books, then perhaps we could remove the numbers and add notes to each titles along the lines of "Sometimes listed as book 2 in the series and other times as book 6"? Or perhaps keep the current numbering scheme and add a note explaining that the ISFDB numbering is based on the publication order, but subsequent reprints sometimes used a different numbering scheme? IMHO the complete removal of the numbers is the best solution. There are so many righteous ways to order a given series (chronogical by writing date, chronogical by internal date, author's whim, publishers' idea, fan's guesses,etc.) that it's perhaps a waste of time. Let's see. The book doesn't explicitly state who the editor was although Silverberg's introduction -- "And that too was the background I offered Jim Brunner and Chelsea Quinn Yarbro for their companion stories in this new volume" -- suggests that it was probably him. On the other hand, the copyright statement is presumably just a way for Silverberg to protect the ownership of his universe and may not necessarily indicate who the editor was. You were right, the number #2522 is very likely erroneous. Only the first titles in the series have explicit series' numbers, after some time they can be inferred from the ISBN (where they appear in bold) or from catalog data. I've deleted it (at best it should be #6032). The price is an artefact coming from the conversion from Francs to Euros (99FF =15.09 €), note that, at the time of publication, the official currency was still the Franc. Kuttner & Moore's "Déja demain" vs. "Ahead of Time"

You verified Henry Kuttner & C.L. Moore's Déja demain as a French translation of their English collection Ahead of Time. This doesn't look right to me, since they only overlap in 5 stories of the 9 that each book has. Stories that are in both publications are: "Camouflage", "Year Day", "Ghost", "Shock", and "De Profundis". But Déja demain is missing the other 4 stories that are in that anthology, and has replaced them with 4 other Kuttner/Moore stories (Vintage Season, When the Bough Breaks, Twonky, and Private Eye). I was noticing this because the Italian "translation" of Ahead of Time (or what claims to be a translation of that anthology) agrees with the English in 6 stories of the 9, and is listed as a separate, non-varianted book. Yet the Italian anthology agrees with the French in 8 of their 9 stories! (I wonder if the Italian translator translated from the French instead of the original English.) If it's ok with you, I'd like to separate out Déja demain as a separate title (not varianted to Ahead of Time), and then variant the Italian Il twonky, il tempo e la follia to Déja demain. Hello Darrah, the point that you evoked is mentionned here. As far as I'm concerned, I use a simple majority rule : if a french collection is given as being a translation of a precise (english) collection and more than half of the french content come from the aforementionned title, I'd vt the french title to the english one. It's the case here, so I'd prefer you to leave the things as they are now (I can't and won't speak for the italian translation). Note that it will also reduce the clutter. Well, that note was written by me, expanding on Ernesto's original note using my copy of the book. Turns out the artist credit was in error for the last two pubs. When I noticed that the credit given in Rias Nuninga's PJF bibliography was for Melvyn Grant, I contacted him. He acknowledged the error, and after some research found Bill Botten's website who credited himself with the first three books of Farmer's World of Tiers series published by Sphere. After changing his bibliography Rias contacted Botten by email. Botten now believes he wasn't responsible for the covers of that series, that they were posted by mistake on his website because at the time he was the art director for Sphere Books as well as doing the covers of many titles published by them. Pierre Grimbert

AmazonCrossing is in the middle of publishing Pierre Grimbert's Le Secret de Ji in English, so I had to poke around to organize our VTs. After researching his bibliography I found that the series was first published by Mnémos in 4 volumes in 1996-1997. It was subsequently revised by the author and published by J'ai lu in 2 volumes in 2003. It looks like your verified Le secret de Ji-2 is a 2004 printing of the latter, but the larger question is whether the extent of the changes in the J'ai lu edition was such that we need a separate series (which is how I have it set up right now) or whether we can enter them as omnibus editions (1+2 and 3+4). Gathering data from other sources it seems that the changes are more of a cosmetic nature which don't warrant a separate series as the titles of the parts stayed the same (I've updated my publication) so, as per our standards (IIRC of course) they're not to be separated even if revised. As far as the larger issue goes, I agree that we generally do not create new titles based on textual variations and record them in Notes. However, when an author does a major rewrite, it may become necessary to create a separate title record. For example, consider David Wingrove's "Chung Kuo" series. The original version consisted of 8 volumes (there was supposed to be volume 9, but it was folded into volume 8) while the "recast" version is projected to have 20 volumes, with much of the material expanded and rewritten. Although some rewritten books will have the same titles, e.g. "The Middle Kingdom" is volume 1 in the original series and volume 3 in the recast series, "The Broken Wheel" is volumes 2 and 7 respectively, "The Stone Within" is 4 and 10, etc, we have the books organized in two separate series with separate titles for clarity. In the April 2009 issue of Analog, does the title of the editorial contain an Arabic numeral 1 or a Roman numeral I? In my ebook version of this issue, the title is "Research I", not "Research 1". Also, please check the title of Mary Turzillo's novelette. In my ebook version (which is prone to error), the title is "Steak Tartare and the Cats of Gari Babakin Station". The print edition have it here, if your question is about the order of the display, it's probably a technical matter. I don't know if a 'sort' (other than by page number) is used during the dispay to order the items and on what field(s) it operates. IMHO the "Mini-Reference Library" item itself is quite useless because it's an hollow shell as there's nothing else in it than the review by Easton which has its own entry.
