Le Livre de Poche and publisher credits

Hello. Just for the sake of coherence, have you already had to deal with this case : the book cover and spine show both LDP and Orbit logos. I was ready to enter the publisher as "Le Livre de Poche / Orbit", but saw that none existed, so I desisted. Could one equal this case to that one, which you have verified ? IIRC, I've already stumbled on one of these here. For the sake of simplicity (and an easier recognition) for "casual" (vs. "bibliographically advanced") users and because we're allowed to regularize publishers, I've stayed with Le Livre de Poche as you can see. There were numerous skirmishises for this specific publisher (IIRC it was one our first debates) but I aim for the db to be of the simplest use so I tend to massively regularize publishers. As an example, such a search result for "Ballantine" can (IMHO) easily drive away contributors and users.Hauck 14:04, 9 September 2016 (UTC)

There is a minor difference to the title of a short story in The Best from Fantasy and Science Fiction 12. Salut Hervé I've been adding the interior artwork to the Chicago Review Press edition of Peter Haining's The Classic Era of American Pulp Magazines. You have the verified copy of the Prion printing, and you may want to import the contents when I'm done. I wanted to mention it now because there are some mismatched credits between parent and child title records. You typically seem to check the cleanup reports before I am awake and will probably see these items showing up. I'll take care of them tomorrow morning. Questions about linking reviews

As you can see on this page, the Spanish and the translated English versions of the REVIEW I created are showing up separately rather than "only appeared as" like they would on a bibliography page. Should I be doing something different? What I did was, I created title records for both language versions, linked both of them to the title record of the novel, then varianted the English one to the Spanish one.

It's probably an artefact of the display method on the reviewed book page as such cases (a translated review) were likely not envisionned at the time. Everything is OK on author's (Borges') page (where the "only appeared" is present).Hauck 17:45, 27 September 2016 (UTC)

Hi, In our data base we have two verified records for Ride the Star Winds: one which credits the cover art to Stephen Hickman -who also did three earlier issues in the Baen Omnibusses- and one that credits the cover art to Alan Pollack, who also did the last two of those Omnibusses. Mr. Hauck, could you give me a rough translation of this title? I have an English version of Yolanda: Slaves of Space which has not yet been entered on this site, but since Eros à l'infini is the only other book that the author wrote under the Dominique Verseau name I'm wondering is this might be another Yolanda book.

Here's a synopsis: "Yolanda Hammerlove has been made a captive of a brutal space race whose ruthless sexual appetites have brought many involuntary shudders of pleasure to their terrestrial prisoners aboard the Rigelian cosmoship plunging through a transdimensional duct into hyperspace. A Biographical Dictionary of Science Fiction and Fantasy Artists

I've added Reginald, Worlcat and LCCN numbers to Robert Weinberg's A Biographical Dictionary of Science Fiction and Fantasy Artists. I also have a question. The cover scan we have appears to be green. My copy is bound in blue cloth and does not have a dust jacket. I'm speculating that the book was issued without a jacket and that the scan is just not reflecting the color correctly. I'll leave a note on the other active verifier's talk pages. IMHO, it's high time to stop or to severely limit the quantity of data entered "around" Borges and other latin-american part-time magic realists. I wasn't probably not firm enough but judging (only alas) by the titles (from Borges, Ben Jelloun y Las mil y una noches: lecturas interculturales to Borges y Praga), quantity of essays entered (that also generally create a "new" author in the db) in the NONFICTION titles are only cluttering our database.Hauck 09:57, 22 October 2016 (UTC)

It's the same title. Once upon a time there were moderators (some now quasi-departed, some not) that had some difficulties with french typographic conventions and had a marked tencdency to "regularize" (in fact to forcibly convert to the anglosaxon way) what was different, sometimes without warning. I have just entered this record of La trace de Cthulhu, without noticing that you had done the same earlier. I didn't notice it, because you hadn't varianted it to The Trail of Cthulhu, contrary to your record of the France Loisirs 1974 edition. Now the problem is this : we entered the story titles differently, not to mention what I think is a typo ("La gorge au-delà de Salapunco" for "La gorge au delà de Salapunco"). When you entered this book, it rang a bell but not loud enough for me to check the matter. You know my aversion to subtitles (because they tend to be variably present and more importantly tend to complicate the bibliographic discourse). And concerning your last remark, I must say I fail to perceive the logic of it ;o) : this 1975 edition, as well as each story, is credited to the one and only August Derleth, like the English original. What, even if it's capitalized in the book? I can't search inside for a French equivalent to that quote, but it is capitalized on the title page (and Gallimard doesn't habitually capitalize titles, as you'll see if you compare some of their other book covers). I think it is fair to say that important buildings/political places like "la Maison Blanche" can be capitalized. To be frank, I'm not here to be funny, as a moderator, I just try to maintain the integrity of the db in its present definition even against the enthusiasm of novice contributors. One of the basic rules that is controlled by a cleanup report with no "ignore" option is that a omnibus must contain (at least) one NOVEL (or COLLECTION record). Upon this, I simply act and clean up. On the philosophical side, re-read my words above: "Spec-fic wise" there is only one text to be included whence its type. There is no mention of First published April 1943 in Unknown Worlds magazine, mine states First published in the U.S.A. by Twayne Publishers, Inc., 1953. The printing date in my copy states Published in Penguin Books 1969, month is not included. The Back Cover of my copy states "Cover design by Franco Grignani. IIRC Anniemod is tackling the same problem but there seems to be some side effects. As an old computer analyst (old in the practician of COBOL and FORTRAN and APL etc... sense), that's why I deliberately entered this kind of titles without such "fioritures". The biggest side effect is search - searching for œ does not find the oe variant and vice versa - so either of the options is not great for search. Adding a transliteration helps until the software is able to handle that -- after all œ may be in the standard set of characters but it is not really easy to make from a standard US keyboard. :) Anniemod 19:20, 26 November 2016 (UTC)

Hello, Can you look at 10000 - Au coeur de l'empire - does it need to have coeur or cœur in the title considering the cover? I know that we are using title page and not the cover as the authoritative version but there is no Look Inside on the French Amazon so cannot see the title page (and my French is not good enough to try to find the title page in any other way). As per cover, I'd say "coeur" as the cover of the pb reprint has clearly the different "cœur". As I said above, I was (and is still not) in favor of some contributor's systematic replacement of "oe" by "œ". The Template:TitleFields:Author wiki page says "Collaborations. If a story has two authors, make the first author you enter the author who is first, alphabetically. Since the order of author entry does not indicate primary author, use alphabetical order." So, even following that, there should never be a Orlock/Cady item, which was what I was trying to fix.

We lack space in the "reject" field. For your first point (author order), IIRC there no way to re-order multiple authors in a specific way. All the submissions trying to change such an order for a given title are, to my knowledge, useless likely for technical reasons. For your second point, it's "logical" that there are two occurences of this text because there are two appearances of it (one in the Subterranean chapbook and the other in the 2015 Cady collection). Those two texts should have been merged by the person who added the second item (in this case probably you). I've done this for you and btw fixed the order to your liking. Yes, the Neil Gaiman one was an older offering but it is the same concept. And you cannot even download the whole of it as a single e-book which kinda makes it a non-publication (in my opinion). Plus they have two/three options (with and without the bonus content). They are not like the 3 for 2 offers entirely but they are similar to authors selling a bundle of a few of their ebooks together without putting them in a single e-book... I usually call the basic rule "no-no-no" meaning that "no non-fiction in non-genre magazines". With very very rare exceptions (as usual, we love exceptions) an essay or a a review about a work of spec-fic published in a non-genre magazine is not allowed in the db. To cite Michael's favorite example, a SF story by Asimov published in TV Guide is in, a article on Asimov in the same magazine is not. As EQMM is not a genre magazine, only fiction (of the sf variety) should be entered. Note that this rule extends also to interviews (I've deleted the two that I wrongly approved).Hauck 16:19, 28 December 2016 (UTC)

Not trying to be disagreeable, but I completely disagree about the disinclusion of The Digest Enthusiast from this site. We include such publications as Blood ‘n’ Thunder and Windy City Pulp Stories are on these pages, and the amount of sf oriented material in these books is as proportionate, at times, to the first issue, I haven’t seen the rest of the issues of The Digest Enthusiast. There is also a tremendous amount of artwork in the form of magazine covers in this magazine. New contributions, with more to come

I'm new to editing this site, so I'm still learning how to make changes. I know of a great many Lois McMaster Bujold translations that aren't in your database, and I would like to add them to it. I do not have physical copies for any of them, but I've done a great deal of sanity-checking to make sure my knowledge is as accurate as any information gotten from the internet can be. Some of them are noted in worldcat and other databases, others are not. Not all of them (particularly older Hebrew and Bulgarian versions, and some Italian ones) have ISBNs, and in fact a few of the Bulgarian ones that do have ISBNs have invalid ones (6-digit that only indicates the country, or the checksum digit is incorrect because they were mis-using the ISBN system in the late 1990s), as near as I can tell. OK, to do this, first you've got to get the URL of the page (in this case http://www.isfdb.org/wiki/images/7/71/NTSKDFNDWL2014.jpg) this is usually done just after uploading the image, then go at publication level (here) and enter the URL in the "Image URL:" field.
