Welcome!

Hello, Fuhsaz, and welcome to the ISFDB Wiki! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

Note: Image uploading isn't entirely automated. You're uploading the files to the wiki which will then have to be linked to the database by editing the publication record.

Please be careful in editing publications that have been primary verified by other editors. See Help:How to verify data#Making changes to verified pubs. But if you have a copy of an unverified publication, verifying it can be quite helpful. See Help:How to verify data for detailed information.

I hope you enjoy editing here! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will insert your name and the date. If you need help, check out the community portal, or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome! Mhhutchins 19:28, 5 May 2014 (UTC)

Offer to source data

I'm the Head Librarian for the University of Massachusetts Amherst Science Fiction Society, a group running since 1964 and having nearly 10 000 speculative fiction books. I have a small personal specfic library myself of about 300 books. The (meta)data I have is available to the ISFDB at large, merely request I verify or add something and I'll pop into the library and see what I can do. I'm currently working on building a digital catalog of all our works, with each book entry containing ISFDB TR and PR numbers, as well as the OCLC#. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Fuhsaz (talkcontribs) .

Thanks so much for the offer to be a source for specific information on the speculative fiction titles in your library. We will surely take you up on the offer. I have copied it the community page so that other users are aware of your offer. Thanks again. Mhhutchins 19:32, 5 May 2014 (UTC)

Changing information for primary-verified pubs

Hi. Thanks for the contributions! A word about editing publications having primary verifiers: It is ISFDB practice (policy, really) that when changing a publication record having primary verifier(s), the verifier be notified by leaving a message on their talk page or following any instructions (including "don't notify me") found there. As a rule of thumb, it's ok to submit additions and to notify in parallel, while if you're going to alter something, you should notify first and wait to see whether the verifier agrees. You'd be surprised how many times we've uncovered additional editions/printings based on very small differences. Since I'm the primary verifier of the 11th Bantam Spectra Red Mars, I'm considering myself notified. :-) Just something for you to keep in mind for the future. Thanks. --MartyD 12:26, 12 July 2014 (UTC)

Aha, thanks for the heads up, I was definitely not aware of this. I'll keep this in mind with my future edits. --fuhsaz 19:47, 13 July 2014 (UTC)

The Gold Coast

Re this publication: You mention in the Note to Moderator field some information that probably should be included in the field, especially concerning the printer's statement on the back page. Also, what are on the extra pages which you gave in the Page Count field? If they don't contain substantial contents, then it's not necessary to include them in the page count. We usually only do this when there are introductions, maps, frontispieces, etc, which appear on the pages before the first numbered page. That's done so that we can place that matter in the contents section of the record. Thanks for contributing. Mhhutchins 00:58, 17 July 2014 (UTC)

For the front pages, there are maps; I followed the convention the nearest-alike pub used. In the back, there's "acknowledgements", some blank pages, and then a barcode and the text containing the printer's statement. Should I have included the printer's statement in the notes, and should I have taken the date listed there as the date for the pub? Should I squeeze the final [7] down to [2], or remove it entirely? Thanks for the guidance, still getting oriented as we can see. --fuhsaz 06:39, 17 July 2014 (UTC)
When you're including in the Page Count field those pages which appear before and/or after the numbered pages, be sure to record in the Note field the reason why. If there is no substantial matter on those pages, then there's no need to record them in the Page Count field at all. Mhhutchins 14:52, 17 July 2014 (UTC)
As I said above, you should probably include the printer's statement in the Note field. That can also be used to date the publication (we still haven't come up with a standard for entering POD publications, since they're relatively new.) If there are maps in the publication you can create content records for them typed as INTERIOART (check any previous versions of the title to see if they are included and then import those title records into your publication record.) Also, did you mistakenly make a second submission for the same publication? It looks identical to the first. If so, please cancel the submission from the list of "My Pending Edits" list. Mhhutchins 01:02, 17 July 2014 (UTC)

I did accidentally submit it a second time (and a third, a few minutes ago when I saw the bug was fixed); there was a bug displaying the result of the submission, and I wasn't sure whether this had blocked the submission from going through or not. Both have been canceled. --fuhsaz 06:39, 17 July 2014 (UTC)
You can always check your "My Pending Edits" list to see if a submission has been accepted, rejected or being held. Thanks. Mhhutchins 14:52, 17 July 2014 (UTC)

Dan Simmons' Hyperion

I added an image to Dan Simmons' Hyperion from my copy. You are listed as Primary reference. I also updated the contents to reflect the excerpt from The Fall of Hyperion that are described. (Such edits can only be made after an entry has been added, making it a two step process). Doug 16:08, 18 October 2014 (UTC)

Great, thanks! --fuhsaz 18:37, 8 November 2014 (UTC)

Ancillary Sword page number note

this pub, a transient verification. You, or someone else, placed a note stating that the story ends on page 256. It's actually 356. Made the appropriate change from a library copy.--swfritter 21:49, 18 May 2015 (UTC)

Yup, it was a typo. Thank you for correcting it. --Fuhsaz 18:06, 13 July 2015 (UTC)

"Conquest", by Lynn Abbey

In your verified publication, you listed the cover artists as "Alex Jay" and "Robert Gould". But Alex Jay was the cover designer, and we do not credit the cover designer as a cover artist unless we know for certain that they drew a portion of the art itself (i.e. not just the layout, font choice for text, etc.). So I removed that credit, although leaving the credit in the notes (which is where those credits go). Chavey 08:55, 9 October 2015 (UTC)
