Fair Use Image Data
Description

Enlarged publisher's logo, from {{{Title}}} -- {{{Edition}}} edition(No Link). The Logo copyright is believed to belong to the publisher or the corporation of which the publisher is a part.

Publisher

{{{Publisher}}}

Source

Unknown

Portion used

The section of the original image containing the logo. This is the amount needed to identify the logo, and compare it with other logos to attempt to identify the publisher, data of publication, imprint, or other bibliographic data.

Fair Use Image Rationale
Purpose of use The image is used as a means of visual identification of the logo, and for comparison with other such logos. Changes in logo style may be used to assist in dating or identifying publications.
Replaceable?

As logos are almost invariably copyrighted, the image is not replaceable by free content; any other image that shows the logo would also be copyrighted, and any version that is not true to the original would be inadequate for identification. Moreover, logos are generally intended to be reproduced to identify the logo-owner and the owner's products.

Rationale

The use of this image, in connection with research into the bibliographic status of various publications, as part of the ISFDB, a non-profit bibliographic reference work, on servers located within the United States, is believed to constitute Fair Use within the meaning of United States copyright law.

Reusers of the ISFDB's content should take care to be sure that their use conforms to applicable copyright law -- not all such uses will constitute fair use, and copyright law varies significantly in different nations.

Documentation for the template: Logo Image Data (transcluded from the documentation page

Purpose

This template is to be placed on the image description page of an enlargement of a publisher's logo from a book, magazine, or other publication. The image should be cropped to just the logo. This template is for cases where the image is used under fair use.

Usage

A minimal call (omitting parameters that can safely be left to their defaults) to the template would be:

{{Logo Image Data
|Title=<publication title>
|Edition=<date and/or publisher>
|Pub=<the publication record number or tag>
|Publisher=<Name of publisher>
|CpyrtHolder=<name of the actual copyright holder>
|Source=<origin of image>
|AddRat=<Additional fair use rationale>
}}

A maximal call, including all parameters, would be:

All parameter names have an initial capitol letter. Case is significant in a parameter name. The order of the parameters is not significant, but the order above is suggested, as it is the order of use within the template.

Note: In all the above examples, when a parameter is shown in angle brackets, like:

<Parameter>

then the parameter, and the angle brackets, should be replaced by the value of the parameter. For example: Title=<TITLE> should become Title=The Name of the Book (or whatever the name might be).

Parameter definitions

Parameter Description Default
Title Should specify the actual title of the book or other publication whose image is being displayed. Required Field
Edition Ideally should specify the year and publisher, e.g. "Ace 1983", or some other text string which will distinguish the pictured edition from other publications of the same title. Required Field
Pub The publication record number or tag. Must be a valid argument to {{P}}. Strongly encouraged. No default.
Publisher Should specify the name of the publisher of the publication displayed, for proper attribution. Required Field
Source Website where the image was obtained, or name or handle of user who scanned the image. If omitted, defaults to "Unknown".
AddRat Additional rationale. Any text spelling out additional reasons why this image qualifies for fair use. Defaults to blank. Should be ommitted unless there is an additional rationale to specify.

Example

For a usage example, see the example page.

Categories

This template places all pages it is used on into Category:Fair use images and Category:Logo images. It will also place each page into a Publisher category, the name being derived from the appropriate parameter. If the Pub parameter is not supplied, the image is also placed in Category:Logo images without publication links.
