Use of Tags
Tags are words and short phrases that help categorize titles in the ISFDB. Marking a title with a particular tag makes it easy to find other titles that also fall into that category. You can define more than one tag per title, e.g. Ray Bradbury's "A Sound of Thunder" may have tags like "time travel" and "dinosaurs" associated with it. Unlike most data submissions within ISFDB, there is no moderator approval needed in order to add a tag -- new tags take effect immediately. Once added to the Title, a tag will be displayed on that Title's Bibliography page. Please do NOT add tags that spoil the plot.
Most tags are descriptive, e.g. "space opera", "time travel", "alien invasion", etc. You can also assign tags to create personal lists like "read list", "verification list", etc, but moderators may change the status of such tags to "private". Private tags can only be seen by the tagger.
Adding/Editing Tags
In order to add a new tag, first display the title that the tag is related to. (Note that variant titles can't have tags associated with them; use their parent titles instead.) Once the title is displayed, you can select a "quick tag" from the drop-down list next to the words "Add quick tag" and click on the "Submit Tag" button. The tag will be immediately added to the title and displayed on the "Current Tags" line.
If the tag that you want to add is not in the "quick tags" drop-down list, click "or manage Tags" to the right of the "Submit Tag" button. This will bring up the "Tag Editor" screen, which contains two sections. The first section lets you add new tags or edit/delete tags that you previously entered for this title. Note that you cannot edit/delete tags entered by other users.
To add tags, enter the first tag in the field labeled "Tag1". If you need to enter additional tags, click on the '+' button next to the field label and a new field will be displayed. Repeat these steps until you have added all desired tags. Once you are done, click on the "Submit Data" button. The tags will be added to the selected title and the Title bibliography page will be displayed.
To edit or delete one or more tags, simply change what's displayed in each Tag field, then click on the "Submit Data" button.
Supporting Lists
The second section of the Tag Editor page consists of two lists. The first list is "Existing Tags Associated With This Work" and lists the tags that all users have assigned to the current title. The second one is "Most Popular Tags in the Database" and shows all tags that have been used by ISFDB users more than twice.
These lists are displayed in order to make it easier for you to decide which tags to add to the title. They are for reference purposes only and you can add previously undefined tags if they are appropriate. However, keep in mind that creating very specific tags or using alternative spelling, e.g. "time-travel" instead of the commonly used "time travel", will result in few titles per tag and will make searching more difficult.
